SAUDADE
From February 15 to March 15 2025, Smith Galeria proudly presents "SAUDADE," an evocative collection of works by Dutch artist Cindy T'Hart. The exhibition features twelve carefully selected pieces that explore the ethereal landscapes of the Dutch Polder, expressed through watercolours and acrylics. T'Hart's oeuvre is marked by fluid, dark-toned imagery that resonates with natural scenery and exposes an intrinsic connection to the artist's emotional and psychological states. The term "saudade," originating from the Portuguese language, is rich in meaning. It derives from the Latin solitas, which signifies solitude or being alone. The concept encapsulates a melancholic feeling of longing and incompleteness, often linked to memories of absence—whether of a person, the intimacy of a place, or the loss of past experiences and joys. This title establishes the thematic tone for the exhibition, providing viewers with a glimpse into the artist's reflections. In T'Hart's words, "These pictures show inner landscapes that reflect my feelings and state of mind. There are fairytales from deep within me." This statement emphasises the introspective nature of her work. Each painting serves as a visual narrative of her world, blending the real and the imagined in a harmonious dance of form and colour. Watercolours and acrylics as mediums allow for a rich exploration of transparency and opacity, mirroring the shifting nature of human emotions. The fluidity of her brushstrokes and the nuanced interplay of dark tones create haunting and serene compositions. These works do not simply depict the physicality of the Dutch Polder; they transform it into a metaphor for the artist's internal journey, inviting viewers to embark on their respective introspective journeys.
